.308 Winchester Bullet Keyring | Real Nickel-Plated Cartridge – Handcrafted Keychain

About the .308 Winchester

The .308 Winchester is one of the most widely used rifle cartridges in the world. Introduced in 1952 by Winchester, it was developed as a commercial sporting round – and almost immediately adopted by NATO as the 7.62x51mm standard cartridge for military rifles and machine guns across the Western alliance.

Since then it has become the go-to round for deer stalking and game shooting across the UK, one of the most popular choices for long-range target shooting and F-Class competition, and the standard chambering for designated marksman rifles in numerous military forces. If you shoot a centrefire rifle in the UK, there is a good chance it’s chambered in .308 Winchester.

.308 Winchester vs 7.62x51mm NATO – Are They the Same?

This is the question that comes up most often, so here’s a clear answer. The .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm NATO are closely related but not identical – and the difference matters to shooters even if it’s invisible on the keyring.

The .308 Winchester is the commercial version, developed slightly earlier. The 7.62x51mm NATO was adapted from it for military standardisation and has a slightly thicker case wall and tighter chamber specifications. In practice, most .308 Winchester rifles will safely chamber 7.62x51mm NATO ammunition, but the reverse is not always true. The two rounds are visually almost indistinguishable – the same overall dimensions, the same profile, the same headstamp area.

The keyring you’re buying is made from a genuine .308 Winchester commercial casing – the sporting and hunting version of this legendary cartridge.

The Nickel-Plated Finish

Nickel plating is used on premium factory ammunition for a reason – it’s harder and more corrosion-resistant than bare brass, which makes it ideal for rounds stored in humid conditions or carried in a magazine for extended periods. On a keyring, that same durability means the finish holds up through daily use without tarnishing or dulling.

The result is a bright, silver tone that looks clean and polished rather than the warm gold of natural brass. If you prefer the brass look, the .308 Winchester is also available in an unplated brass version – this nickel-plated version is the silver alternative.

Choosing Your Attachment Type

This keyring comes in two options – here’s what each means:

  • Split Ring (25mm stainless steel) – a standard keyring loop that attaches the cartridge directly to your keys. The most popular everyday carry option.
  • Inert Round (no attachment) – the cartridge on its own with no fitting. Ideal as a display piece, desk keepsake, or if you want to fit your own attachment. Also works well presented loose in a gift box.

Note: this keyring uses a split ring rather than a swivel pin. If you prefer a rotating swivel pin attachment, take a look at the 7.62×51 NATO keyring which offers that option.

Personalise It

For £3.99 extra we’ll laser engrave the casing before dispatch. A name, date, regimental reference, or short message all work well on the .308 casing. Select the personalisation option at checkout and add your text. Engraving is permanent and won’t peel or fade.

FAQ Section (Add as Accordion or Plain Text Below Description)

Q: Is this made from a real .308 Winchester casing? Yes – every keyring is handcrafted from a genuine once-fired .308 Winchester nickel-plated cartridge casing. It is not a replica. The casing has been fired, cleaned, resized, and fitted with a professionally seated bullet.

Q: Is it safe to carry? Completely. The keyring is 100% inert – there are no live components, no primer, no powder. It is legal to own and carry anywhere in the UK without any licence required.

Q: What is the difference between .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm NATO? They are closely related but not identical. The .308 Winchester is the commercial sporting version introduced in 1952. The 7.62x51mm NATO was adapted from it for military use with slightly different case specifications. Visually they are almost indistinguishable. This keyring is made from a .308 Winchester commercial casing.

Q: What is the difference between the split ring and inert round options? The split ring attaches the cartridge to your existing keyring as a standard loop. The inert round option has no attachment at all – it’s the bare cartridge, ideal as a display piece or desk keepsake. Both are the same casing and finish.

Q: Can I get it engraved? Yes – select the personalisation option at checkout (+£3.99). We laser engrave directly onto the brass casing before dispatch. A name, date, or short message works well. Engraving is permanent.

Q: Is there a brass (non-nickel) version? The .308 Winchester is also available in an unplated brass finish – that version has a warm gold tone rather than the silver of this nickel-plated one. Search for the 7.62×51 NATO Bullet Keyring in our range for the brass alternative.

Q: Is the .308 Winchester legal to own in the UK? Yes. The .308 Winchester is one of the most common centrefire rifle calibres in the UK, widely used for deer stalking and target shooting under a Section 1 firearms certificate. The inert once-fired casing used in this keyring is completely legal to own without any licence.

Q: Are there .308 cufflinks available too? Yes – we have the .308 Nickel Plated Bullet Cufflinks handcrafted from the same nickel-plated .308 Winchester casings. A matching set of keyring and cufflinks makes a strong gift combination for any .308 shooter.
